Pulaagam: A Celebration of Fulani Heritage
For decades, Fulani people have been migrating from Mauritania, Senegal, and other West African nations to Columbus, seeking a safe and affordable place to live and raise their families. The Ohio Immigrant Alliance works to build connection and understanding among Ohioans of all backgrounds.
On June 7 at 3pm, we'll be at the Columbus Arts Festival for the fourth straight year, on the Word Is Art Stage & Acoustic Lounge (map). Last year, our program featured West African drumming from Tam Tam Magic, who mesmerized the crowd and drew dancers of all ages to the stage. This year, we're spotlighting Columbus' very-own female griot, Habi Gawlo, and poet-activist Houleye Thiam in "Pulaagam: A Celebration of Fulani Heritage." The audience will also be treated to recorded music from Salif Sarr, a Columbus artist and vocal advocate for the Fulani people of Mauritania.
June 7 is also the beginning of Eid al-Adha (Feast of Sacrifice), one of the holiest annual celebrations in Islam. Read more here and join the discussion in our Facebook Event. Learn more about the Ohio Immigrant Alliance's arts programming here.
